Our lack of plans this weekend made us really unmotivated to do anything. We spent most of Saturday lazing around. Finally, when we couldn't stand our lazy selves any longer, we decided to build a new fire pit. The old pit was more of an outdoor chimney/BBQ pit. It wasn't on level ground and only got warm on one side, so when we had parties, everyone would huddle around the front and eventually tip over in their chairs (all of those spilled drinks!!!). Plus, it was starting to crumble and was in a weird location- smack dab in the center of the lawn.

I had already scouted out a new fire pit location on level ground, so I gathered our motley collection of lawn chairs and placed them in a big circle. PRH pounded a piece of rebar in the center, hooked on a measuring tape, and measured out 2 feet. Erin Lang Norris has great DIY fire pit-building instructions. She made hers 5 feet across and said that it was a bit too big, so we made ours 4 feet across. 

I held a can of spray paint at the 2 foot mark and made a wonky circle.

We removed the grass and dug down about one and a half feet. We filled the hole with a layer of pea gravel and a layer of sand. Then came the fieldstone. 

We demoed the old fire pit and used that fieldstone to build the new one. My rock stacking skills aren't the best, but I think it looks OK for this year. We didn't use any concrete or any fancy stones, so this was a really cheap project (we spent $20 on gravel and sand). 

You can see a few here, but we're planning to line the interior with bricks. The fire pit area seats 15 comfortably, which tends to be the size of parties around here.   

Here are my people on that very same day, roasting marshmallows and enjoying our new fire pit. Would we love something like this that's a bit more landscaped? Maybe, but this works great and is casual in a way that perhaps better suits our old farmhouse.
